Crossing the Begwns

Hit the trail . . .

Arrive at FreeRein HQ for 9am to meet your guide, fellow riders, and horses. Then ride over the Begwns through Painscastle and on across the heather moorland of Glascwm & Gwaunceste Hill to the Red Lion Inn at Llanfihangel-Nant-Melan. It is a fine, long and varied riding day in the saddle.

The Red Lion is a picturesquely situated old inn under the steep slopes of the Radnor Forest and has catered for more riders than any other FreeRein accommodation. During that time it built up a trade and reputation to fit the description "restaurant with rooms".

There are two log fires (burning real logs!) in the warm and cosy bars and meals are enjoyed by both residents and many regular locals. The present owners, John & Sandra, professional and friendly inn keepers, took over a few years ago and all continues to work well. Food is good and sensibly priced. There are a couple of good real ales and the wines are affordable.

It is one of the few inns that can offer accommodation for more than six riders and is a very popular overnight stop.

Return relaxed and refreshed . . .

After a comfortable night in the relaxing atmosphere of the Red Lion riders saddle-up for the return route through Black Yat, lots of open hill and back to HQ.

The usual return to HQ is for 5-6 p.m. Time now to unsaddle and finish the riding holiday with tea and cakes while your guides take care of the trusty steeds.

A relaxing and invigorating weekend riding holiday away from it all on a real trail ride.

First Day . .

Trail Explorer Map

Arrive at FreeRein HQ at 9am. Meet fellow riders and guide.

Pack your saddle bags then prepare your horses (guide on hand to explain any thing you are unsure of).

Tea and see your route for the day, depart FreeRein.

Out on trail all day to the Red Lion Inn.

Arrive at Llanfihangel-nant-Melan, untack, feed & turn your horses out in the field.

Enjoy a relaxed evening at the Red Lion.

Second Day . .

Feed, groom and tack up your horse.

Out on trail all day.

Return to FreeRein HQ around 5-6pm for tea and homemade cake.

The price is £302 per person including everything except your lunches and evening meal.
