Unguided Horse Riding Holidays . .
Horse riding holidays
Give your horse a brush, check the hooves, tack up, study the maps & routes, spring into the saddle and away into the hills - with the FreeRein Horse Hire Service you are riding your own horse along your own chosen trail - and in the exclusive company of friends and/or family. By the end of the first day in the saddle you will have got to know your four footed friend who knows all the tracks and paths through the hills - but, alas, cannot know where you are trying to get to. When you and your horse leave FreeRein HQ only you will know which of ten farms or inns is going to be your overnight stop. Your very own horse riding holidays!.
Individually arranged horse riding holidays
As each trail is individually arranged for you and your riding companions trails may start & finish on any day of the week from April 4th to November 1st 2009.
On Trail
Throughout your trail you are free to arrange your own day and to travel at your own pace. Often there will be a choice of routes - especially if you are a competent map reader - otherwise we would advise sticking to our ‘door-to-door’ route descriptions. FreeRein horse riding holidays through the hills are not waymarked and finding the way requires a real input from the rider. But we are always available on the FreeRein Helpline. Either find a farmhouse with a phone or a place where your mobile works - not always easy, but heading upwards will often work!
Choosing a Trail
Dusk on the River Wye
This is important. Do not overestimate. Do not book a trail which becomes an endurance test for you and your riding companions. You may have been a regular rider in the past but do not expect to be able to enjoy doing what you were able to do ten or twenty years ago. Most riders, especially those who are new to FreeRein, will tend to travel, on average, quite slowly. Making sure you are on the right route is important and takes time until you have got used to how the maps and route descriptions work. Opening and closing gates can also be time consuming - but there is no rush. If you average 3 miles per. hour on the first day you are doing fine.
Riding Ability
All riders must be able to sign the Declaration of Horsemanship but you will be riding at your own pace.
Riding Groups
For safety reasons there must be a minimum of 2 riders. Under 16’s should be accompanied by 2 adults, under 18’s by one adult. Ring to discuss minimum age.
Luggage
Overnight luggage is delivered on most horse riding holidays. Cameras, First Aid kit, lunches etc are carried in saddle bags. There are saddle ties for spare clothing.
Charges
See individual horse riding holidays, to left. As a guide they are based £130 (incl. Vat & luggage delivery) per person per day plus accommodation.
Riding hats
We advise riders to wear protective hats but cannot enforce their use on unescorted horse riding holidays.
