Penybont Trail - 2 days
Enjoying a cow parsley snack
The Penybont Trail is a two day self-guided freerein+ trail ride. It stays overnight at the Severn Arms Hotel in the village of Penybont from which this trail takes its name. It is two very long days in the saddle of 18-22 miles in length. It's the longest two day trail that we normally offer (although longer routes are always available by request!).
This trail ride starts from Pendre Barns, Painscastle although as with all of our trails you still come to freerein HQ first to pack saddle bags, go through maps and routes and of course collect your fit and friendly GG’s.
For freerein+ trail riders only . . .
Please note that this trail ride is only offered to those with previous experience of one of more self-guided trail rides with freerein. If you are contemplating your first self guided trail with us you can view a selection of suitable trails by following this link: horse riding holidays.
If some members of your group have done previous self-guided trails and others haven’t, bookings on freerein+ trails such as this one should be suitable for you and are most welcome. If you are unsure please do not hesitate to contact us for a chat.
Long challenging days in the saddle . . .
A brisk trot up the lane out of Painscastle brings you swiftly onto the grassy expanses of Llanbedr hill. A familiar hillside to regular freereiners, it offers great views and wide grassy cantering terrain. Crossing Llanbedr you then head directly north skirting around the highly under-rated Red Hill, over Glascwm Hill then Little Hill and Gwauncestre Hill coming gentle to land at the ancient Four Stones and a gate leading down off the open hill - the first since Painscastle. This means an ungated section of open hill riding totalling some 8-9 miles.
The route leads down to the Fforest Inn a possible late lunch and beverage stop. From here you climb back uphill onto a high exposed ridge which offers great views of the surrounding area. This Ridge skirts the edge of the Radnor Fforest before crossing the Cowlod. You then drop down to trot out the lanes and over Penybont Common to Penybont itself where the welcome sight of the Severn Arms Hotel looms into view.
Stay overnight at an historic coaching hotel . . .
The Penybont trail stays overnight at the Severn Arms Hotel. It has a lively local trade, two bars and a restaurant. The horses relax a two minute stroll away in the village.
Explore the wild and remote Radnor Hills . . .
The return trail riding route climbs back onto the westward edge of the Radnor Forest, along this and back down to Llanfihangle Nant Melan. Here you may either revisit the Fforest Inn or trot half a mile down the road for lunch at the Red Lion Inn. This is the perfect launchpad for the route back over Black Yat, Llanfihangel Hill, Cwm Kesty, Bryngwyn Hill and back to Painscastle.
For those with energy remaining you could pop back over the Begwns to freerein HQ. Most people tie the horses in Pendre Barns call us for collection then retire to the Roast Ox for a well earned apres-trail beverage, while the horses munch on their pony nuts.
The Penybont Trail is a challenging and exciting two day trail ride. We all look forward to welcoming you soon on the Penybont Trail Ride . . .
