Old Penybont Trail - 3 Days
Autumn pony round-up in the Radnor Hills
Ride the Old Penybont Trail . . .
The Old Penybont Trail is a three day trail ride staying overnight at the Harp Inn and the Severn Arms Hotel. It is three medium to very long days in the saddle of 16-22 miles in length. The longest day is the final one and if you return all the way to freerein HQ totals some 22 miles. This trail ride starts from Pendre Barns, Painscastle although as with all of our trails you still come to freerein HQ first to pack saddle bags, go through maps and routes and of course collect your fit and friendly GG’s.
For freerein+ trail riders only . . .
Please note that this trail ride is only offered to those with previous experience of one of more self-guided trail rides with freerein. If you are contemplating your first self guided trail with us you can view a selection of suitable trails by following this link: horse riding holidays.
If some members of your group have done previous self-guided trails and others haven’t, bookings on freerein+ trails such as this one should be suitable for you and are most welcome. If you are unsure please do not hesitate to contact us for a chat.
Explore Offas Dyke & Hergest Ridge . . .
The trail ride to the Harp at Old Radnor takes you past the Royal Oak in Gladestry. It is a potential late lunch stop, but only for those who move swiftly and trot out the miles. Otherwise take lunches and tie up somewhere along Offas Dyke after Newchurch or for an early nibble, Newchurch Hill by the old railway carriage. Lots of good canter opportunities along Offas Dyke and Hergest Ridge.
Waterfall in the hills
One of the many highlights of this route is the part of Offas Dyke which takes you along the Hergest Ridge of Mike Oldfields Tubular Bells before the exhilarating steep track which takes you to the Harp at Old Radnor, your overnight stop.
Middle day discovering water-break-its-neck . . .
The route from the Harp to Severn Arms crosses the Radnor Forest. Either take the shorter route along the old green lane leading into New Radnor, with option for an early lunch at Radnorshire Arms. You would then climb up onto the top of the Forest via Harley Dingle.
Alternatively take the lanes back onto Caety Tralow and Black Yat, and head for Water Break its Neck, tie up by the stream among the giant pines and eat a packed lunch before climbing up and over the edge of the Radnor Fforest and down to Penybont and the Severn Arms Hotel where you stay for night.
Wild and remote Radnor Hills . . .
The return route climbs back onto the westward edge of the Radnor Forest, along this and back down to Llanfihangle Nant Melan. Here you may either revisit the Fforest Inn or trot half a mile down the road for lunch at the Red Lion Inn. This is the perfect launchpad for the route back over Black Yat, Llanfihangel Hill, Cwm Kesty, Bryngwyn Hill and back to Painscastle.
For those with energy remaining you could pop back over the Begwns to freerein HQ. Most people tie the horses in Pendre Barns call us for collection then retire to the Roast Ox for a well earned apres-trail beverage, while the horses munch on their pony nuts.
The Old Penybont Trail is a challenging and exciting three day trail ride staying overnight at one inn and one hotel.
We all look forward to welcoming you on the Penybont Trail Ride . . .
