The Trans Cambrian North starts near the Welsh/English Border in the Wye Valley and finish on the sands of the Dovey Estuarty on Cardigan Bay - six day journeys in the saddle crossing Wales along unmarked tracks and trails through wild remote hills and mountains (see map below and the Trans Cambrian Trail Map). Staying overnight at small inns along the trail. Riders carry spare clothing and personal effects in expedition saddle bags attached to the saddle.

North Route

Trans Cambrian North riders will probably be familiar with the first section of this trail which crosses the Radnor Hills and Radnor Forest then follows the Ithon Valley up to Llanbadarn Ffynydd to the New Inn. From here there is a rugged jumble of hills, valleys and woods to navigate through as you cross the Marteg Valley and then descend to the River Wye at Llangurig. Throughout you are in a land where you may well ride all day without seeing any other living creature save sheep, buzzards and kites. After a night at the Blue Bell in Llangurig head north into the Hafren Forest and ford the infant stretches of the River Severn to emerge onto the wilds of Plynlimon. After a comfortable night at the lonely Star Inn saddle up early and set forth to cross the wilds of the Plynlimon Mountain range. On this day you really do get the feeling of being alone in the vastness of the mountains. Finding the way through the bogs of the central Hengwm Valley is quite challenging but there is an alternative route if the weather is misty or, indeed, for those who prefer to do without the boggy challenge!

Routes meet

At the Black Lion the North and South routes meet. The last day is a leisurely trip along lanes and through woodlands into Borth where Cardigan Bay stretching out before you. Then - tides permitting - a three mile ride along the beach to join the equibus in the sand dunes of Ynyslas on the Dovey Estuary. Its the The End. A ride you will not forget. You are now entitiled to an broidered FreeRein Logo badge!.

Unguided

The unguided FreeRein Trans Cambrians, either South or North, are for riders who have already done one or more FreeRein unguided trails. They are for the resourceful rider with a true sense of independence. The maps are detailed but the route descriptions for these longer trails are not as detailed as for those in the Radnor Hills returning to FreeRein HQ. There are five overnight inn stops along the trails with 6 days riding & route finding. Each day is 15+ miles with total climbs & descents of 15,000 ft.
