Introduction

The Trans Cambrian South starts near the Welsh/English Border in the Wye Valley and finish on the sands of the Dovey Estuarty on Cardigan Bay - six day journeys in the saddle crossing Wales along unmarked tracks and trails through wild remote hills and mountains (see map below and the Trans Cambrian Trail Map). Staying overnight at small inns along the trail. Riders carry spare clothing and personal effects in expedition saddle bags attached to the saddle.

southerly Route

This season 2008 we are for the first time - in response to rider requests for new challanges - a southerly route to the coast, The Trans Cambrian South. This route was ridden by FreeRein staff and helpers at the end of last season. From Pendre Barns riders spend the first two days followinbg the picturesque Wye and Irfon Valleys along the northern edge of the Epynt before heading north into the Cwmdaudwr Hills - those wild open spaces, the Welsh desert, which form the catchment area for the Elan Valley Dams. You are now in the Cambrian Mountains, the backbone of Wales. Now a long day in the saddle - but with easy route finding and clear tracks - to cross to the western side of the range and stay in Pontrhydfendigaid at either the Red or the Black Lion. Then a leisurely day to Devils Bridge and the Hafod Hotel. Here you may find an abundance of people attracted by the falls and the way marked trails.

The next day takes you along some steep tracks and then, leaving Ponterwyd, narrow lanes and tracks into Talybont and the Black Lion Hotel. At the Black Lion the North you join up wioth the Trans Cambrian North. The last day is a leisurely trip along lanes and through woodlands into Borth where Cardigan Bay stretching out before you. Then - tides permitting - a three mile ride along the beach to join the equibus in the sand dunes of Ynyslas on the Dovey Estuary.

THE END

You are now entitiled to an embroidered FreeRein Logo badge!.

Unguided

The unguided FreeRein Trans Cambrians, either South or North, are for riders who have already done one or more FreeRein unguided trails. They are for the resourceful rider with a true sense of independence. The maps are detailed but the route descriptions for these longer trails are not as detailed as for those in the Radnor Hills returning to FreeRein HQ. There are five overnight inn stops along the trails with 6 days riding & route finding. Each day is 15+ miles with total climbs & descents of 15,000 ft.
