The Ox Trail - 2 Days

Escape to the hills . . .

The Ox Trail starts with the old lanes leading out onto open hill with wide easy to follow tracks through the bracken. Have a canter or two here then pause to take in the panoramic views back to the Brecon Beacons and the Black Mountains.

You travel the full length of the Begwns before fording the Bachhowey Brook and crossing the valley up onto Llanbedr Hill. From there is a choice of longer or shorter tracks leading eventually to the Roast Ox Inn, Painscastle where you and your horses rest for the night.

The tiny hamlet of Painscastle was once an important stopping place for the drovers taking their cattle from west Wales to London. At this time there were seven pubs! Now only the Roast Ox remains. It is a character some old place. The chef is good and there is lively local trade attracted by the excellent real ales, ciders and food.

Your trusty steeds enjoy a night in the field opposite the inn and can be viewed from most of the bedrooms.

Return relaxed and refreshed . . .

Your return route takes you over Llandeilo Hill with good canter opportunities and far reaching views. Then skirting Llan-Bwchllyn lake and crossing the valley to rejoin the north west corner of the Begwns. The trail then takes you on the other side of the Begwns with a detour to the highest point (the roundabout) highly recommended to take in the 360 degree views. From here you can see some of the terrain already explored and the scope for future horse riding holidays.

Finally - drop down off the hill and return along the quiet lanes and through Cwmsirhwy wood to FreeRein HQ.

First Day . .

Arrive at FreeRein HQ at 9am. Pack saddle bags then prepare your horses.

Go through your individual route pack & depart FreeRein.

Out on trail all day.

Arrive at Painscastle, untack, feed & turn your horses out in the field.

Enjoy a relaxed evening at the Roast Ox Inn.

Second Day . .

Feed, groom and tack up your horse.

Out on trail all day.

Return to FreeRein HQ around 4-5pm for tea and homemade cake.

The price is £302 per person including everything except your lunches and evening meal.

Your Horse Riding Holiday . .

A real two day trail ride staying overnight at a welcoming country inn. Excellent riding on varied terrain with medium length days in the saddle.
