Introduction

The ride to Llanerchcoedlan Wells from HQ was one of the earliest FreeRein Trails, first offered riders in the Autumn of 1989. It remains deservedly popular. After a brisk trot along the wide grassy tracks over the Begwns, or even perhaps a gentle canter or two, your trail descends through old green lanes and woodland tracks to cross the River Wye at Llanstephan. Here the wooded Wye Valley is at its scenic best. The rocky outcrops and the rapids of Hell Hole are visible upstream as you cross the river by the old suspension bridge.

Llanerchcoedlan

The route now heads uphill to Llanerchcoedlan Wells - an old working hill farm whose sulphur springs were once a popular attraction. Riders with a little energy to spare in the evening can wander down and see the old pump house and stone trough where visitors used to “take the waters”. The hospitality and home cooked food here are in the best traditions of upland Wales and most rooms are now en suite or with their own bathroom.

Return Route

There is a choice of routes back to HQ with the longer of the routes offering the option of the Roast Ox as a lunch stop.
